Taiping Bridge

The Taiping Bridge is located at the eastern mouth of Hougang to connect Chenghuang Dam and Xianjiang Street. It was built during the Jiajing period of Ming dynasty (1522 – 1566), with funds donated by local residents.

It was rebuilt in the 36th year of Emperor Qianlong in the Qing dynasty (1771). The bridge is 13.2 meters long and 2.5 meters wide. It is a single-arch stone bridge with a span of 4.8 meters. The bridge is engraved with a lotus seat pattern. It was renovated in early Qing dynasty.

The bridge is cloaked with vines whose roots working down between the stones. At an side of the bridge lies the former residence of Shen Tilan, featuring coarse plaster walls, pitched roof, gables and windows without glass panes. The traditional dwelling houses are lined along a clear stream, projecting an ideal landscape.
